River Buffer Effectiveness in Controlling Surface Runoff Based on Saturated Soil Hydraulic Conductivity

In tropical Indonesia, rainforests are managed by an intensive forest management system (IFMS). The IFMS has promoted selective logging for timber harvesting and line planting to enrich the standing stock. implementation of reduced canopy cover, disturbed surface soil, changed soil hydraulic properties, increased direct runoff erosion. Investigation impact on properties generation using a saturated conductivity model is needed. Soil were investigated 11 plots, including one virgin plot 10 plots at different operational periods IFMS. A two-dimensional water flow simulation was applied generate from main parameters net rainfall, used in simulations. scenario hydrograph operations analyze river buffer effectiveness. results showed that fundamental activities associated with mechanized have within near-surface profile. recovery time Ks non-skidder tracks between 15 years, whereas skidder it more than 20 years. Forest disturbances altered typical hydrological pathways, thereby creating conditions surfaces undisturbed surfaces. Maintaining area effective means reduce peak discharge stream channel.
